Instead, the Bears right guard reserved his weeping for the ride home from Soldier Field the night of Nov. 25 {keyword} . Tears trickle {keyword} d down his cheek as his slumped inside teammate Patrick Trahan's Ford pickup, and Trahan remained mum as his roommate struggled through the moment."I don't think there was anything to be said at that point,'' Louis recalled. What happened hours before spoke volumes about Louis' emotional state. Vikings defensive end Jared Allen delivered a brutal blindside block to Louis after a Jay Cutler interception. The impact sen {keyword} t the 6-foot-3, 320-pound Louis tumbling to the ground."When the doctors came up, they thought I had a concussion,'' Louis said. "But I heard a pop. By the time I got over to the sideline, I knew I tore it.''Louis ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee the same injury he endured in his right knee during college. Allen's hit not only kept Louis from finishing a contract season, it caused an already much-maligned offensive line to regress.Regardless, Louis says he holds no grudge against Allen."I never faulted him,'' Louis said Friday in his first public comments since the injury. "I'm pretty sure he didn't have any bad intentions toward me."I'm hard on myself. I should have looked. I felt like I should have taken a peek or something. But I know what I signed up for. There's always that possibility of getting hurt in this game.''Allen apologized through the media for what Bears teammates termed an "unnecessary'' play. In their minds, the $21,000 fine assessed against Allen wasn't severe enough."If he did get fined or didn't, it wouldn't have mattered to me,'' Louis said. "It happened. It's football. It's unfortunate, but I'm cool. I have no doubt I'll be back playing at a high level.''Besides, Louis has overcome much worse. While growing up in a desolate area of New Orleans, Louis never imagined escaping the depressing environment and having a successful pro football career."There were no good sides of town in New Orleans,'' he said. "None.''One incident struck fear in Louis more than any other. It was during his senior year of high school, when he attended a dance with some friends off the East Bank. Afterward, Louis and a couple of friends were robbed at gunpoint. The gunman aimed at Louis and demanded the throwback jersey he was wearing."There wasn't too much to say,'' Louis remembered. "I just pulled it off my back. What else was I going to do but give it to him?''Surviving a life-threatening situation makes the recovery from a devastating knee injury seem trivial. Saturday marked the fourth week since surgeon Mark Bowen repaired Louis' ACL. Louis started light rehab exercises a few days after surgery."I really never experienced any pain after surgery," Louis said. "It's strong. It's getting better every day. Everything is going cool.''

A judge today lifted his court order protecting the old Prentice Women's Hospital from demolition, dismissing a lawsuit by preservationists but giving them 30 days to amend their complaint.Judge Neil Cohen had issued the order in November barring demolition while he considered whether the process by which the building was denied landmark status was properly carried out. While giving preservationists more time to save the Streeterville building from the wrecking ball, Cohen strongly hinted he would be hard-pressed to give it permanent protection. He explained that he was hemmed in by decisions by the state Supreme Court limiting his power to overrule a decision of the Chicago Commission on Landmarks.A lawsuit by preservationists contended the commission violated the city's landmarks ordinance when it rescinded its own vote on landmark status for old Prentice, owned by Northwestern University. That unusual maneuver took place Nov. 1, when the commission first voted to give the old hospital preliminary landmark status, then revoked that status on the basis of an economic impact study by the city's Department of Housing and Economic Development. After today's hearing, Northwestern University said it was "pleased" with Cohen's decision. The university said the new building planned for the site "will be connected on a floor-by-floor basis with the existing university research building just to the west of the site. Doing so will bring researchers together and thereby enhance the chances of finding breakthroughs in cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders, among others. The site is the linchpin for what will be a major new medical research hub."

Government statisticians said 155,000 jobs were added to the labor force in December, and revised November s job growth upward by 24,000 workers, keeping the unemployment rate steady at 7.8%, the lowest since December 2008.The government on Thursday reported an, but the overall picture has improved. For all of 2012, 1.86 million jobs were created and represented the largest annual gain since 2006, Nothaft said.Congress and President Obama also averted a threat to the economy by voting not to let taxes rise on most Americans this year, as they had been scheduled to do under the co-called fiscal cliff provisions that had been set to take effect Jan. 1.A strengthening economy increases the probability of higher inflation and makes stocks more attractive to investors. Both those factors tend to drive investors out of the market for fixed-income securities, sending bond yields higher.Fixed mortgage rates tend to track the bond market, especially the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which had dropped below 1.6% in early December but has risen to about 1.9%.Investors had become complacent about record low interest rates, said Scott Simon, the head of mortgage securities trading at Pacific Investment Management Co. in Newport Beach, which runs the world s largest bond fund.Still, Simon said, lenders have been making so much money on mortgages that they won t have to raise their home-loan rates as fast as the yields on Treasuries are rising. The average 30-year mortgage rate hit a record low of 3.31% in late November, according to Freddie Mac, which asks lenders about the terms they are offering to borrowers with solid credit and at least 20% down payments or 20% equity in their homes if they are refinancing.Borrowers often find slightly better rates if they shop around, and can reduce the rates by making additional upfront payments called discount points. Third-party charges often paid by borrowers, such as the costs of appraisals and title insurance, are not included in the Freddie Mac survey. data by RELATED:
